I walked into my mum’s newly renovated ‘granny annex’ in the middle on winter and immediately felt a gorgeous warm glow emanating from somewhere. I realised it wasn’t the expensive electric heater she had been using, but the discrete glass Infrared heating panel high on the wall that Brad was testing for his construction company’s latest electrically powered multi-residential development. I was hooked right away as I am a strong disciple of the “Form Follows Function” principle of design, and one of my design icons is Dieter Rams; products and processes that are practical, simple, discrete, and aesthetically pleasing. Responsible design and reducing consumption are major drivers for me – I designed a domestic electrical distribution track system called AllSocket for my Engineering Product Design degree with the purpose of reducing consumption that won the Ideal Home Show concept award in 2009 so FIR panels tick all my boxes. Brad and I realised when talking about our respective latest projects that our principles and goals, whilst coming from very different backgrounds and industries, are the same, andour respective skillsets and disciplines are complimentary, so it made perfect sense to work together – and thus Thermoception was born!
